On August 1, 2013, the Ministry of Health changed the structure of physiotherapy programs for seniors in Ontario. As part of this change, the Ministry introduced FREE programs for seniors related to physical activity and physiotherapy. Better Living Health and Community Services was selected by the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) to provide more than 200 fitness and falls prevention programs on an annual basis at more than 50 sites across North York… and the Better Living Centre is one of them!

The Better Living Centre offers FREE specialized Fitness classes for those 65+ that run ongoing and indefinitely. These classes have been developed to help individuals cope with potential falls and include a combination of strength and balance exercises that will help increase general mobility, endurance and balance.  The wide variety of Classes are divided into the following categories:

Low Intensity – Suggested for individuals who are new to structured classes/fitness, use an assistive device and/or prefer to follow a beginners pace.

Medium Intensity – Suggested for individuals who have some fitness experience , are able to lift at minimum 2 pound weights, stand without the assistance of a device/chair and participate in standing exercises.

Intermediate Intensity – Suggested for avid fitness participants who are comfortable with impact cardio and core strengthening exercises.

Free Exercise and Falls Prevention Classes FAQs

Who Can attend these free classes? Anyone over the age of 65 can attend and participate for FREE. If you are under 65 years of age, a minimal pre-paid class fee of $2.50 and a $30 membership fee per year will be applicable

Can I start the program immediately? No. All participants must complete a brief telephone assessment by the CCAC prior to starting the program. Please phone (416) 222-2241 ext. 6444 to enrol/register for the group exercise program at Better Living Centre. Once we receive your information through our Help Desk, we will process your registration AND you will need to bring your OHIP card and complete a registration form prior to starting your first class.

Is advance registration required? If you have already completed your CCAC assessment and Better Living registration form, there is no advanced class registration required – you can just show up! We encourage you to attend as often and as many different classes as you can, however, if numbers increase beyond the room capacity a waitlist may need to be generated.

How many classes can I attend per week? As a requirement for this funding we ask that all participants try their best to attend a minimum of two classes per week. The classes can be mixed and matched. (E.g. Stretch and Strengthen on Monday and Zumba Toning on Thursday.)

How long does each program Run? All Free classes are ongoing indefinitely unless you are informed otherwise by your instructor. There is NO end date.
